How to Build Your Personal Wiki
Ok so as everybody knows I am slow and behind the curve on most web stuff. I am just now understanding what people mean by 'web 2.0', how to make money blogging, and all the social media sites. So it will be no big surprise to you that I have just found out about personal wikis! Because I know there are people even less internet astute than I am (my family and friends LOL!) I will post instructions here.
You may be wondering, what is a wiki? Most of you know about Wikipedia, but did you know you can set up your own page like that?
Definition: Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly. Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms in that it allows the organization of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself. Like many simple concepts, "open editing" has some profound and subtle effects on Wiki usage. Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a Web site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web and promotes content composition by nontechnical users. Historical Note. The first ever wiki site was created for the Portland Pattern Repository in 1995. That site now hosts tens of thousands of pages.

How to host a personal wiki on your home computer: Gina from Lifehacker.com has a great tutorial up about how to set up a wiki on your computer. Imagine storing and editing your to-do lists, bookmarks, snippets of text, project notes, reference material, images from the web or anything you wanted on your home computer from anywhere just using a web browser - no disks, thumb drives, text editors, or file transfers required. This is possible with a personal wiki.
If you've got a web hosting plan you can install any number of free wiki packages on your server. If not, it's easy to install a personal wiki on your home computer to read and write to from any web browser. In this tutorial, we'll set up a wiki on your home computer so you'll always have access to a searchable, editable personal notebook.

That's great info, but I knew it would be a little too technical for most of my family and friends. After looking around a little more I cam across Wikispaces, a website where you can easily set up your own wiki with zero technical know-how. It's as easy as signing up for email. I set up a Positivity wiki page, as I've been wanting to start an online community or other online interaction about positivity for some time. I'm tweaking it and will post the addy soon!
